No Local RE Notes

Can you suggest a method for a newbie to gain his first leads as near home as possible ?? I always thought it best to start locally to learn any new business first hand.
I have researched at Data Quick and First American Real Estate Services as well as nearby county recorders. It seems that less than five private real estate notes have been recorded in 25 years in all of Arkansas,Mississippi, and Tennessee. This seems strange to me for a city area as great as Memphis.
Any suggestions ???
