As a guess, I think I'd register the securing note with the county, then reference it in the newer note with language something like '...that certain promissory note, dated blahblahblah, and recorded as document whateverdocumentnumber at the Recorder's Office of Local County, in the State of Confusion, USA.'

If it's been recorded, it's then a matter of public record. Referencing it by the correct recorder's document number makes the reference unambiguous.

Not sure if this helps. Best to talk to your attorney.
