All IRA's are self directed. Some people just don't know that and turn the direction over to a bank or other institution.

You can do a "Trustee to Trustee" transfer with no penalties or any kind. This isn't a rollover, just a change of the trustee. You can then use American Pension Services or one of the others that like to deal with note buyers. You can invest that little into a note.

Once nice technique is to buy a whole note and sell a partial. You then may have a very little amount invested for a great return at little or no tax.

See the article posted here titled "Tall Tails" that shows how to do this and shows an examle of buying a note and selling off a partial for the full amount of funds that was needed to buy it in the first place. How does 15 years of free cash flow sound?
